ROLLTOP 2.0: flexible capacity for all your plans

ROLLTOP 2.0: flexible capacity for all your plans

I first discovered GUD through the previous-generation Rolltop backpack. Since then, I’ve picked up several more bags from the brand, but the Rolltop is still going strong after nine years. It’s been my main and only piece of luggage on countless business trips and journeys. Most importantly, it was my everyday backpack for five years straight.

This review focuses on the new Rolltop 2.0, but my time with the earlier version shows just how comfortable, durable, and practical these backpacks are—even if they look ordinary at first.

The Rolltop 2.0 is a great example of a smart upgrade. It adds useful features without losing what made the original so popular. Now, there are extra front pockets for quick access to essentials and a side pocket for a water bottle. I didn’t miss these features before, but now I can’t imagine the Rolltop 2.0 without them.

There are three external pockets: two on the front, protected by a sturdy front panel, and one on the back. You can easily reach documents, chargers, a book, or other small items. The back compartment fits a MacBook (up to 16"), with a zipper and padding to keep your laptop safe.

A key feature of this backpack is in its name. A rolltop means the top can be unrolled to give you more space when you need it. It won’t replace a suitcase, but that’s not what you’d expect from a city backpack anyway.

That’s why the main compartment and three internal pockets can hold a lot, since you can expand the volume from 22 to 27 liters. You can pack clothes for a trip of more than three days or for a busy day in the city with work and a workout. In my experience, a MacBook, a book, gym clothes, sneakers, and even a tennis racket all fit comfortably. Best of all, everything has its own place, so nothing gets mixed up.

No GUD product can be described without emphasizing the materials. In this case, the main body is made of waterproof 750D Kodra Nylon with a polyurethane coating that provides external water resistance. In short, snow and rain may affect you, but never the things inside the Rolltop 2.0. The fabric is also extremely durable, ensuring protection for your belongings, including gadgets. The bottom is made from strong, waterproof POLYMAR® fabric with a vinyl coating, which is easy to clean. Since backpacks often end up on the ground, being able to wipe off dust and dirt quickly is a real advantage.

The nylon thermoplastic hardware is reliable and can handle heavy loads and temperature changes you get in city life. If you have a dog, though, keep the backpack out of reach. One of my buckles survived everything except being chewed on for a long time.

Comfort is also a priority. The back panel and shoulder straps are made of soft, breathable mesh, which is great in summer, and the reinforced, ergonomic straps help distribute weight evenly. For example, it stayed comfortable even on my way up Mount Shpytsi. Still, this backpack isn’t meant for serious mountain hiking.
It’s an extra, but I think it’s a must-have: a chest strap for the shoulder straps makes any backpack much more comfortable for daily use. Rolltop 2.0 doesn’t include one by default, but you can find it in the accessories section on the GUD website.

The simple, minimalist design of the Rolltop 2.0 means you’ll look good whether you’re in a blazer or a tracksuit. No matter what you wear or where you go, it always fits in. Looking at my old, well-used first Rolltop, I’m sure the new version will look just as good in 10 years. After all, I’m the only one who knows how much my first Rolltop has been through.

The two-year warranty is there, but you probably won’t need it. That’s a great feeling, especially for a product made in Ukraine. Even better, GUD has always focused on quality, durability, and practicality.

Some people just don’t like the rolltop backpack style, and that’s fine. GUD offers about 10 different backpack models to fit various needs.
If you like the rolltop style and want a backpack that’s reliable and versatile, the Rolltop 2.0 is a great choice. It adapts to your needs, protects your things in any weather, and works well for both daily use and travel.

The rolltop construction of the backpack guarantees protection against the elements and allows you to increase the internal usable volume by +5 L, while numerous pockets and a protected compartment for a MacBook 16" make it an essential daily backpack.
